Physical Education

Physical fitness is not only one of the most important keys to a healthy body. It is the basis of dynamic and creative intellectual creativity. (John F Kennedy)

At Greengate Lane Primary Academy we expect the highest aspirations for our pupils. We want all children to learn and make academic progress no matter their starting points. We have a clear vision for what we want pupils to achieve during their time at Greengate Lane Primary  and have designed our curriculum to give all pupils the knowledge, skills and understanding they will need in their future years.

Curriculum Information

Curriculum Intent Statement

At Greengate Lane Primary Academy, we aim for our pupils to lead active and healthy lifestyles through our Physical Education curriculum. We aim for our pupils to enjoy physical activity and to take responsibility for  making a positive impact on their own physical health and well-being. We want all pupils to experience a wide variety of sports and physical skills which will enhance life-long fitness and life choices. As physical education often promotes self-esteem, we want our pupils to be involved in a range of activities so that they develop physical confidence, resilience and motivation.

Curriculum Implementation

At Greengate Lane Academy we aim to deliver high quality and inclusive PE lessons to ensure children will develop a passion for physical activity and sport. Alongside our whole school values, the curriculum uses a whole child approach to ensure children are resilient and will strive to achieve their personal best. We listen to our pupils and offer them a range of active experiences and clubs. We are dedicated to helping the children develop healthy minds as well as bodies and will continue to support mental well-being. We have links to local clubs within our community so that children and families can receive the support and knowledge they require.

Curriculum Impact

Teaching staff record assessments for all pupils at the end of each half term. This is done by making informal judgements as they observe the children during lessons, and through assessing against specific criteria that is set out in the detailed lesson plans. Assessments are recorded on the Get Set 4 PE learning platform and are monitored by the school PE curriculum lead.  We have clear expectations of what the children will know, understand, and be able to do at the end of each key stage.

In addition, we measure impact of PE through:

  • Lesson observations – how well children are performing contributing to discussions and how they are using the vocabulary and instruments they are being introduced to.
  • Learning walks – how well the curriculum intent is embedded.
  • Pupil voice – enables us to listen to pupils’ views about their learning and how well curriculum content is taught and understood.

To monitor impact, we will use the following impact statements to evaluate how effective our PE curriculum is:

The ability to swim at least 25 metres before the end of Year 6 and knowledge of how to remain safe in and around water.

Pupils make progress and attain in line with or better than age expectations, as set out by the National Curriculum.

A broad PE curriculum will enhance pupils’ lives, build capital culture and instil a love of learning.

Pupils will have high expectations of themselves and a drive for excellence. They will acquire new knowledge and skills and develop an in-depth understanding of PE. They will demonstrate a willingness to practise skills in a wide range of different activities and situations, alone, in small groups and in teams and to apply these skills in chosen activities to achieve high levels of performance.

Pupils will have high levels of physical fitness and will talk about having healthy lifestyles.
